Simons Shoes first opened its doors in 1892 on Charles Street in Boston, near the Public Gardens.  Immediately following the first World War, Simons moved to Brookline’s Coolidge Corner neighborhood. At that time, the Coolidge Brothers still operated their general store at the intersection of the neighborhood’s two major streets, where they catered to the growing affluent population, who were moving from the city to the suburbs to buy land and build houses.

Geographically, Brookline is often considered part of Boston - it’s surrounded by the city on three sides, after all. When Boston started “gobbling up” and incorporate its suburbs in the early 1800s, however, Brookline was the lone holdout- and remains so to this day.  The town is still governed by representatives who make up the Town Meeting- Brookline’s legislative arm of government.  To the rest of the world, we’re proud Bostonians... that is, until someone in Boston does something foolish, when we’re sure to remind you that we’re from Brookline.

For more than 100 years, Simons Shoes has never been more than a few hundred feet from our current location.  When it comes to our products and the technology they use, however, we’re miles from where we started.  When we first opened our doors, horse-and-buggy was the travel standard; popular song lyrics included lines like "Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer true..." and shoes were little more than leather and wood, meant to protect feet from cobblestone streets, with some fashionable flair thrown in for the high-end crowd.  Today we’ve got Ultra-Low Emission vehicles, lyrics that would make your granny blush, and shoes that not only look great, but feature soles made from high-impact, shock absorbing materials with customizable interiors for an individual fit.

From horse-drawn-buggies to hybrids and simple soft-soled shoes to sandals, wedges, flats, runners and many more, we’ve come a long way- as a society and a store.  Next time you’re in the area, we invite you to come in and take a look around.  If you can’t make it to Brookline, check out our website and when you're ready to buy - or if you have any questions - give us a call.  We’re happy to provide you with the expertise, knowledge and customer service of more than 100-years of helping people out!
